Serological profile of prolapsed and non-prolapsed sows

Abstract
Feeding different sources of Zn at nutritional levels to nursery pigs during a chronic immune challenge can improve growth performance and immune response. Our study found that Zn Hyrdoxychloride improved (P < 0.04) G:F during and following a chronic immune challenge. It also showed a positive (P < 0.003) increase in BW change from in both h 0-3 and h 0-24 during the challenge compared to ZnO. Additionally, h 0-3 febrile response was lower (P < 0.004). Both Zn Hydroxychlroide and ZnSO₄ (P < 0.01) had higher serum concentration at h 0 and 3 compared to ZnO. Our experiment looking at differences in blood parameters between prolapsed and non-prolapsed found several differences. Prolapsed sows had lower (P < 0.054) Col1, TIMP-1, Fe, Zn, and, Mo, while tending (P < 0.10) to have lower Se. We also observed prolapse sows to have higher (P < 0.026) Mg and TNF-α while tending (P < 0.10) to have higher MMP-1 compared to non-prolapsed sows. Prolapsed and non-prolapsed sows previous litter data showed that prolapsed sows were in lactation longer (P < 0.05) and tended (P < 0.10) to have higher stillborn. The use of water-soluble micronutrients and antioxidants were tested to see the effect on sow reproductive performance, pre-wean mortality, and prolapse rate. Our study found that adding water-soluble micronutrients and antioxidants does not improve (P > 0.10) sow reproductive performance or prolapse rate. We did see a difference (P < 0.02) in weaned pigs, live born, stillborn, and lactation days among the farms in this study. Total born also tended (P < 0.10) to differ among farms. These studies suggest that feeding Zn Hydroxychloride to nursery pigs during and following a chronic immune challenge can improve efficiency. As well during a health challenge Zn Hydroxchloride has lower febrile and TNF-α response. We additionally found that some serum minerals, collagen, and TNF-α differ in prolapsed sows. Additionally, a sows previous lactation length and number of stillborn could influence prolapse. Supplying sows a blend of water-soluble micronutrients and antioxidants does not improve sow reproductive performance or reduce prolapse rate.
