Abstract

University students, who play online games can spend enormous amounts of time in the Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG) environment. Additionally, there is an increase each year in students completing university online classes. This Mixed Method study aimed to find if the amount of time spent in the MMORPG environment helped students develop or enhance skills that would transfer into the online classroom. Using Binkley et al. (2012) KSAVE 21st Century Skills model this study used, (a) problem solving skills, (b) critical thinking, (c) communication, (d) collaboration and teamwork as the organizing framework. Based on a review of the literature, these skills are pertinent in both environments. A paper survey was distributed to members of an eSports club, and college students had the opportunity to take part in individual interviews, as well as a six-person focus group. Analysis of the surveys found significance in perceived skill transfer from the game to an online course, the amount of time the student spent playing the game each week, and the classification of the student. Qualitative analysis found students apply skills from the game to the online class. Students also adopt certain characteristics from their online gaming roles and apply these characteristics to their approach to their online class. Further research is needed to identify the depth in which these skills transfer, as well as the complexities of how students identify with the roles they play within the MMORPGs.
