Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine if those who actively participate in their discharge recommendations from a physical rehabilitation setting who were diagnose with a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) influence their Health – Related Quality of Life score (HRQOL). Discharge recommendations are instructions provided by healthcare professionals that assist individuals with the process of transitioning to various levels of care. Current research indicates that those who have experienced a CVA prefer to participate at light intensity level (1-2 days per week) whereas, healthcare professionals recommend participating at a moderate to vigorous intensity level (3 – 5 days per week). Physical rehabilitation has been a common treatment for individuals who have experienced a CVA focusing on impaired functioning. Eleven participants completed the HRQOL self-reported assessment, and two participants reported participating in discharge recommendations at a light intensity level, six participants reported participating in discharge recommendations at a moderate intensity level days per week) and three participants reported participating in discharge recommendations at a vigorous intensity level (4-5 days per week). Participants that participated in discharge recommendations at the vigorous intensity level HRQOL scores increased. The results of this study add to the knowledge about the use of vigorous participation in discharge recommendations in those who have experienced a CVA increase health – related quality of life.
