Scope of Study: This report is an attempt to indicate that there is a place for handicrafts in the industrial arts program in the high school, and to outline a handicrafts course which will apply to a particular small high school. In the report are included a short history of handicrafts and descriptions of individual handicrafts and trade crafts. Data were procured entirely from library sources.

Finding and Conclusions: Handicrafts are as old as any knowledge of mankind, and until the industrial revolution were an indispensable part of human culture. Modern machines and the methods of manufacture which have developed from the use of machines have made the pursuit of handicrafts, for the most part, economically unprofitable. However, the innate values of handicrafts are too important to allow them to disappear, and the high school industrial arts department is one of the best mediums for helping to retain the skills and accumulated knowledge of handicrafts. The values of handicrafts today include helping youth to understand fundamental industrial processes, the relaxing and refreshing benefits of hobbies, developing an appreciation of the value of beauty and good workmanship in useful articles, and development of skill in decorating and maintaining the home.
