The present study examines the validity of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire short-form (APQ-SF) for Latino immigrant parents of adolescents living in the United States. Data were collected on 83 Latino adolescents and their primary caregivers from the first wave of a larger intervention study. Secondary data analysis was conducted to determine the association of APQ-SF parent self-report measure and youth self-report indices of educational aspirations, delinquent behaviors, antisocial peers, and grades. The exploratory factor analysis of the APQ-SF indicated a two-factor solution of Positive Parenting and Poor Monitoring/Supervision. Results did not reveal significant differences on these factors related to adolescent or parent gender. Results demonstrated a lack of predictive validity for established adolescent outcomes related to positive parenting and parental monitoring. The findings of this study suggest that the APQ-SF has still not been adequately validated among this specific population. Future longitudinal research should be conducted with a larger sample of Latino immigrant families before determining the validity of the APQ-SF with this population.
