Abstract

Scope and Method of Study: A survey of the literature was made to determine history of the search for the gene during the formative years as a science to recent findings in molecular genetics. The work of several investigators who are exploring the code between transfer RNA and messenger RNA to explain the route of synthesis of amino acids into protein is discussed in some detail. Recent findings on the behavior of genetics on the molecular level are then described. Possible explanations of classic genetic mechanisms are offered with indications that non-chromosomal genes, hormones and enzymatic feedback to the DNA from the environment must now be considered in any selective gene action.

Findings and Conclusions: The genetic code between messenger RNA and transfer RNA has essentially been solved with 19 of the 64 possible code words remaining to be confirmed.
